Calvary Baptist Church was established on December 5, 1948. The original congregation consisted of 13 charter members, led by Bro. T. R. Bedford, the church’s first pastor. Calvary met in an old revival tent for a short while before moving briefly into an army barracks at the intersection of East and Reimen streets. Within its first year, Calvary Baptist baptized over 100 people and built its own church building on Miller street.
During the early years, several revivals were held at Calvary Baptist Church. Many souls were saved and many people committed their lives to the Lord. The church ordained numerous deacons and even licensed several men into gospel ministry. The church had an active and fruitful Sunday School, women’s, and men’s ministry.
Over the years, various classrooms, a fellowship hall, a kitchen, a nursery, and 2 bathrooms, were added to the original church building. These projects took place in 1953, 1964, and 1999. A concrete parking lot was laid in 1993 and a metal garage/storage building was purchased in 2000 and placed on the southeast corner of the lot. In recent years, we’ve sought to make updates and improvements inside the church.
Calvary’s parsonage was built just east of the church in 1964. Since its building, the parsonage has been bricked in 1977 and remodeled in 1994. Part of the garage was taken in to create another bedroom in 1999. A privacy fence was put up in the early 2000’s. No major work has been done on the house since that time.
During its history, Calvary has been involved in missions work in a variety of ways. During the 1980’s Calvary served as the mother church for the Spanish Mission that was established here in Seymour. It has also been involved in past mission projects to Mexico and Russia, and currently provides support and serves as a sister church to Heaven’s Way Church in Namble, Kenya, Africa.
Though Calvary’s attendance has declined sharply over the past 20 years due to several factors, the Lord is still actively at work in our small congregation. We may be small, but God has a way of using little things to do great work. Knowing this, we joyfully celebrate His faithfulness to us on the historic milestone and look forward to many years ahead.
Calvary Baptist Church celebrated its 75th anniversary with a special service and lunch on Sunday morning, December 3, 2023. Bro. Jack Bedford, the son of Bro. T. R. Bedford, who was just a young boy when the church was born, delivered the message. Now in his mid-80’s, Bro. Jack is the only surviving member of Calvary’s 13 charter members. We were so excited to welcome him back to Seymour on this momentous occasion.
